Three Card Poker

Three Card Poker

Three card poker was introduced way back 1994 by Derek Webb. It was also known as Brit-Brag and Casino Brag. Similar to the other games, three card poker can also be played online over the internet. The three card poker game has two modes of play namely the Ante and Play. In some casinos, you can play both the Ante and Play but it is optional.

How to Play Three Card Poker

After all Ante/Play wagers are placed, three cards are dealt on both hands of the player and the dealer. A player that has the Ante wager has the option to fold or continue the game by placing a Play wager equal to the Ante. The dealer will then turn over their three cards. In order for to qualify for the play, the dealer must have at least a Queen high or better. If the dealer qualifies, they will pay or take each Ante/Play wagers depending on who has the highest hand.

Nevertheless, standard poker hand rankings apply, and below are just some of its examples:

  • Straight Flush – three suited cards in sequence e.g. 2-3-4 of hearts
  • Three of a kind – three cards of the same rank
  • Straight – three cards in sequence
  • Flush – three suited cards
  • Pair – two cards that have the same rank
  • High card – the highest card in the player’s hand

The house pays an Ante bonus on three of winning hands. There is no wager needed for this bonus.

  • Straight flush 5-1 or 4-1
  • Three of a kind 4-1 or 3-1 and
  • Straight 1-1

Strategy of Three hand poker

Because the dealer needs to be qualified in order to pay the Play Bet, therefore, the player should fold if his hand is lower than Queen, 6 or 4 and play if his hand is the same or higher. To determine if the player’s hand is better than Queen, 4 or 6 he must look at his first highest card and compare it to the Queen, if it is higher then the player should play and ignore the other two cards. However, if the player’s card is higher than Queen and his second card is higher than 6 the player will still play regardless of the ranking of his third card, if it is lower than 6 then the player will not play.

The Pair Plus

This is based only if the player’s three cards has a Pair or higher. If the player’s hand has a pair or better, he wins. If he does not have a pair, he will lose. It does not matter if the dealer qualifies or beats the player if the player has a bet on the Ante game.
